Opportunity Home Launches ‘Housing Power Hour Plus’ to Reframe the Affordable Housing Conversation

March 28, 2025

In a time of growing public debate and shifting federal priorities, Opportunity Home San Antonio is taking a different approach—slowing the conversation down, creating a space to listen, and bringing the focus back to the people and communities at the center of the affordable housing crisis.

Today, the organization launched Housing Power Hour Plus, a new, ongoing educational series designed to deepen understanding, strengthen cross-sector collaboration, and shed light on the systems and stories that shape the local housing landscape.

“Behind every policy debate or zoning decision is a person, a family, a neighborhood,” said Teresa Menéndez Myers, chief of staff at Opportunity Home, who led the first session. “This series is about understanding those connections—because real solutions start with shared understanding.”

The inaugural session, held at Opportunity Home’s Central Office, brought together elected office staff, policy advisors and community representatives for a deep dive into the evolution of federal housing policy, today’s most pressing housing challenges, and the core concepts that often get lost in translation—but are essential to shaping sound policy, accurate reporting and meaningful community engagement.

“This is about more than programs and policy—it’s about people,” said Michael Reyes, acting president and CEO of Opportunity Home. “As Texas’ largest housing authority, our responsibility extends beyond providing housing. We must also lead conversations that build clarity, trust and understanding among the many partners working to create a stronger, more equitable San Antonio.”

Each Housing Power Hour Plus session will explore a different theme, ranging from financing mechanisms and legal frameworks to resident engagement and housing innovation. Participants received tools and materials to support continued learning, along with insights to inform their work and strengthen community impact.

The series reflects Opportunity Home’s broader commitment to transparency, collaboration and human-centered housing solutions.

“Every day, we see the impact of stable, affordable housing,” Myers added. “A senior finally was able to afford medication because their rent went down. A child doing better in school because they’re no longer bouncing between apartments. These are the stories that fuel our mission—and the stories this series is designed to elevate.”
