Proposed Ordinance Strengthens Housing Access for Veterans

Opportunity Home San Antonio, the city’s largest provider of affordable housing and rental assistance, stands behind the ordinance introduced by Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones to strengthen housing access for veterans and promote fair, consistent access to rental housing for those using federal housing assistance.
Opportunity Home connects federal housing resources to homes across San Antonio. Through programs such as Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH), the organization supports veterans in securing stable housing while also connecting them to health care and other critical services.
In a community that honors its deep military ties, expanding access to housing for veterans is a shared responsibility.
“San Antonio has long taken pride in being Military City USA,” said Michael Reyes, president and CEO of Opportunity Home. “Even one veteran being turned away from a housing opportunity is one too many. This ordinance is a practical step to help ensure veterans who rely on these resources are able to use them as intended.”
VASH vouchers play an important role in helping veterans achieve housing stability, but their effectiveness depends on having a range of housing options available throughout the city. Broader access creates more pathways for veterans to live near employment, family support systems, transportation corridors and essential services.
Opportunity Home works closely with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and with property owners across the city to support a leasing process that is clear, consistent and reliable. Ongoing efforts to streamline procedures and reduce administrative challenges are helping strengthen participation and expand available housing options.
“Participation from landlords is essential,” said Stephanie Rodriguez, senior director of Housing Voucher Services at Opportunity Home. “Expanding access means continuing to build strong partnerships and making it easier for owners to take part. When more housing options are available, veterans have a better chance of finding a home that meets their needs.”
