SAN ANTONIO — Spurs guard Lonnie Walker instantly remembers his favorite Thanksgiving meal from his days growing up in Pennsylvania.
- Walker delivered meals to five families
- Families are part of SA Housing Authority’s Family Self Sufficiency Program
- H-E-B also supported Walker
“My dad used to make… my senior year he made deep fried turkey,” Walker said.
He also knows what it’s like not to have that traditional turkey day dinner.
“Everyone has their own trials and tribulations so we had times where we didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving,” Walker said.
Days after his delivered meals to residents of his hometown, Walker visited five San Antonio families in need with Thanksgiving meal kits, pots and pans, Spurs swag and game tickets.
For Sandra Castro, a 22-year-old mother of three, the second-year player completely changed her Thursday plans.
“I didn’t really have a turkey, I didn’t have nothing because right now I don’t have a car,” Sandra Castro said. “So him bringing me that, it just made my Thanksgiving.”
Castro and the other families are part of the Opportunity Home San Antonio’s Family Self Sufficiency Program, which helps residents become economically stable through goal setting and mentoring.
“Mine are to finish college, to get out of housing and to make my family better,” Castro said.
Walker says helping families with Thanksgiving was his idea, and the Spurs supported him by teaming up with H-E-B.
