Beat the Heat
Summer break is officially over but the summer heat is still here.
To beat the heat, take advantage of the following resources provided by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County.
Project Cool
Seniors 60 years old and older can request a box fan free of charge by calling 211, which is the United Way Helpline. A box fan comes in handy for seniors living without air conditioning or circulated air, as they face a higher risk of heat related injuries during the summer.
Cooling Centers
Cooling Centers throughout San Antonio and Bexar County can help seniors, young children and those with existing medical issues get a reprieve from the heat. While those venues are helpful to those specific groups, the Cooling Centers are open to everybody.
Here are some nearby cooling centers in San Antonio and Bexar County where you can chill out at. All Bexar County-specific Cooling Centers are open from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For those needing a ride to a Cooling Center, VIA offers free trips to and from locations during their specified hours of operations. To plan your trip, download the VIA goMobile app or call the GoLine at 210.362.2020. VIAtrans customers can book trips by calling 210.362.5050. You can also board a bus and let a driver know you need a ride to a cooling center.
