Taraji’s Story

The 2026 Opportunity Home Fiesta medal features artwork by Taraji Uribe, an Opportunity Home San Antonio resident whose poster earned national recognition in the “What Home Means to Me” contest hosted by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).
The annual competition invites youth living in affordable housing communities across the country to share what home means to them through art and writing. Representing NAHRO’s Southwest Region, Taraji was selected as one of 12 national winners.
As part of the recognition, Taraji’s poster is also featured in the NAHRO “What Home Means to Me” 2026 calendar alongside other winning entries.
Her poster shows a home resting on four pillars labeled guidance, love, support and nurturing — the values she believes form the foundation of home.
In the essay accompanying her artwork, Taraji wrote:
“Home for me is filled with guidance, support, love and nurturing by my family. It is a shelter of comfort and freedom where I can be myself and feel the safest.”
Her message about home inspired the design of the 2026 Opportunity Home Fiesta medal, celebrating the idea that home is more than a place. It is the foundation where families grow, children feel supported and opportunities begin.
