Opportunity Home housing Leader Accepts Denver Position

The Opportunity Home San Antonio (Opportunity Home) President and CEO David Nisivoccia has been named Executive Director of the Denver Housing Authority to lead its transformative housing vision.
With nearly 34 years of housing industry experience, Nisivoccia is an award-winning national leader in the affordable housing industry who has led the most awarded public housing agency in the nation during his nearly six-year tenure as the president and CEO. Nisivoccia was instrumental in guiding Opportunity Home through a transformative period.
During Nisivoccia’s tenure, the number of low-income households served by Opportunity Home increased by more than 1,200 with projections to build nearly $1 billion in new, modern, affordable housing consisting of nearly 7,500 new housing units to meet the housing demand in San Antonio.
Nisivoccia’s innovative approach brought to fruition the Mayor’s Housing Policy Task Force recommendations to increase production of new affordable housing units and rehab of existing housing stock.
Key achievements of Nisivoccia include:
- New housing choice vouchers for foster children transitioning into adulthood through the THRU Project.
- A new Housing Assistance Program with Alamo Colleges to offer homeless students at both Palo Alto College and St. Philip’s College a housing choice voucher for affordable housing while they complete their studies.
- New affordable housing options for veterans including new developments such as Culebra Crossing which will have a full-time Veterans Service Officer to provide counseling, assistance accessing benefits and transportation to the nearby VA Hospital.
- Opportunities for residents to become homeowners — the ultimate dream for many Opportunity Home residents.
- Expanded social services for residents including financial literacy, case management, job training and digital access through Opportunity Home’s ConnectHomeSA.
- The completion of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant for East Meadows on the Eastside.
- Breaking 80-years of stalemate to begin the process to finally replace the Alazan Courts, San Antonio’s oldest public housing community, with 21st century housing units.
Nisivoccia joined Opportunity Home in April 2013 as the chief operating officer, and in March 2015, was appointed to serve as Opportunity Home’s interim CEO, following the resignation of former president/CEO Lourdes Castro-Ramirez, who joined the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Public and Indian Housing in Washington, D.C. After serving 20 months in an interim capacity, the Opportunity Home Board of Commissioners unanimously approved Nisivoccia’s appointment as the agency’s official chief executive.
Nisivoccia previously served as the executive director of housing authorities in Fort Pierce, Florida, and Morgan City, Louisiana, as well as deputy director of a housing authority in Clearwater, Florida.
The Opportunity Home Board of Commissioners will name the interim in the coming weeks as they prepare to select an executive search committee.
