—
On Oct. 30, Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28), announced $11,172,810 in federal funding for Opportunity Home San Antonio. Congressman Cuellar was joined by Opportunity Home Chairman of the Board Gabriel Lopez and Acting President and CEO Michael Reyes for a special check presentation at the organization’s Central Office.
Congressman Cuellar secured the funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Capital Fund Housing-Related Hazards and Lead-Based Paint Capital Fund Programs. These programs focus on evaluating and eliminating residential health hazards in public housing, including lead-based paint, carbon monoxide, mold, radon, and fire safety. Opportunity Home received $6,277,810 from the Lead-Based Paint Capital Fund and $4,895,000 from the Capital Fund Housing Related-Hazards.
“We are grateful to Congressman Cuellar for securing this critical funding needed to assess and reduce residential health hazards in our public housing,” said Reyes. “This funding will help us to address the rehabilitation of our existing housing infrastructure, specifically potential health hazards related to outdated, deteriorating construction, ensuring our residents have a healthy and safe place to call home. Opportunity Home faces more than $400 million in deferred repairs, threatening the health and safety of our residents as our already aging infrastructure continues to decline. That is why this funding is so important.”
With these two programs combined, Opportunity Home’s $11,172,810 is the largest funding amount allocated in the country.
“Today, I am pleased to announce $11,172,810 in federal funding for Opportunity Home San Antonio,” said Dr. Cuellar, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “This funding is critical in combating health hazards in public households in the district. This funding is an investment in the health and long-term success of the community. I want to thank Opportunity Home Chairman of the Board Gabriel Lopez, Acting President and CEO Michael Reyes, Government Relations Advisor Hector Morales, and State Representative Josie Garcia for being here today and for their effort in fighting for a healthier community.”
