Supporting Resident Success

We are committed to the development of educational opportunities to help break the cycle of poverty among students who reside at subsidized properties of the Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher Programs. We are dedicated to helping youth who reside in public housing or HCV properties attain self-sufficiency through educational opportunities.

Resident Scholarship

Opportunity Home RESIDENT SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline: 11:59 p.m., July 6, 2025

Established in 1998, the Opportunity Home Resident Scholarship helps make higher education more affordable. It supports students from Opportunity Home San Antonio’s Public Housing and Affordable Housing Communities, as well as those in the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

These Scholarships are awarded competitively, depending on funding availability. The scholarship may be awarded to students currently attending college or a university, a technical school or other type of higher education program. This year the 2025 Resident Scholarship Award amount is $3,000.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Be a resident of Opportunity Home San Antonio Public Housing, an Affordable Housing Communities property or receive assistance through the Housing Choice Voucher program (as stated on the lease).
  • Currently attending or planning to attend a college, university, technical school, or other post-secondary institution.
  • Be a graduating high school senior, a current full-time student, an incoming college student for Fall 2025.
  • Bachelors Degree, enrolled as a full-time student (12 undergraduate semester hours)
    Master’s Degree, enrolled as a full time student (9 graduate semester hours)
    Technical, trade, or certification programs, enrolled as full-time status in accordance with the schools policy
  • Submit two letters of recommendation (from non-family members only). Letters of Recommendation must be signed, and must include the following information: Name, title, email, and phone number of person providing letter
  • Complete the required 500 word essay,following to all requirements
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Eligible residents may receive the scholarship for up to a maximum of five years.
How to Apply
  • Applications and supporting documents must be submitted online.
  • Completing the application does not guarantee a scholarship award.

Application Guidelines

To be considered, applications must include the following:

  • Completed Online Application
    Fill out all sections. If something does not apply, mark it as “N/A.”
  • Proof of Full-Time Enrollment
    Submit proof for the upcoming semester or school year as a legible PDF or scanned image (no screenshots).
  • Proof of GPA
    Provide the most recent semester GPA or school transcript as a legible PDF file or scanned image (unofficial transcripts are acceptable; screenshots are not accepted).
  • 500-word Essay
    Complete the required 500 word essay, following all requirements
  • Submit two letters of recommendation (from non-family members only)
    Letters of Recommendation must be signed,
    and must include the following information: Name, title, email and phone number of person providing letter
  • Usage Flexibility
    The scholarship has no usage restrictions, meaning funds can be used for books, tuition, school supplies or other education-related expenses.

TIMELINE
  • Application Opens | June 6, 2025

    Submit your completed application and all required documents by the deadline.
  • Review and Selection | June 9 – July 16, 2025
    Applications will be reviewed and recipients will be selected.
  • Processing Appointments and Photoshoots | July 23, 2025
    Selected recipients will be scheduled for processing and a photoshoot at Opportunity Home.
  • Award Ceremony | Aug. 1, 2025
    Location and time to be announced
    The first disbursement for Fall 2025 will be awarded.
  • Next Steps | Dec. 16, 2025 – Jan. 7, 2026
    Submit proof of eligibility, transcript and proof of registration for the Spring 2026 semester.
    Deadline: All documents must be received by Jan. 7, 2026
    Second Disbursement: $750 will be issued by Jan. 16, 2026 if all documents are received on time.

PASSION FOR LIFE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

JOSHUA LONGORIA “PASSION FOR LIFE” (PFL) MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

You do not have to complete a separate application for this award. Eligible applicants may receive an additional one-time award of $500. Applicants must not have previously received this scholarship to be considered for this additional award. The essay you write is very important as there are a limited number of PFL scholarships available.

 

ABOUT JOSHUA LONGORIA | 1994–2018
The Joshua Longoria “Passion for Life” Memorial Scholarship honors students who are passionate about serving others, inspired by the life and legacy of Joshua Longoria (1994-2018). Established by his mother, Laura Longoria, an Opportunity Home employee, this scholarship celebrates students who demonstrate resilience, compassion and a commitment to making a positive impact, just as Joshua did while battling melanoma cancer.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Meet all eligibility requirements for the Opportunity Home San Antonio Resident Scholarship
  • A high score on the “PFL Essay,” per the rubric, is required.
  • Select “Yes, I am applying for Joshua Longoria ‘Passion For Life’ (PFL) Memorial Scholarship” on the application form
Important Details
  • No separate application is required.
  • The Education Committee will review and score all essays using a rubric.
  • Previous PFL Scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply again.
  • A limited number of PFL Scholarships will be awarded.
  • The PFL Scholarship follows the same timeline as the Opportunity Home Scholarship.
Award Payment
  • The $500 scholarship will be disbursed on Aug. 1, 2025, along with the Opportunity Home Scholarship Award for the Fall 2025 semester.
Essay Requirement
  • Applicant must write a one-page essay addressing the following prompt: Reflect on the challenges within your field and consider how you will cultivate a “Passion for Life” in those you serve, particularly when they face significant hardship. Provide concrete examples of how your actions will inspire and uplift others. Furthermore, elaborate on how your own experiences overcoming difficulties have influenced your approach and how your resilience and dedication will positively affect those around you. Use real-life examples to demonstrate how your efforts can tangibly impact lives, fostering hope and motivation.

REACH AWARD

REACH Award

Deadline: June 27, 2025

The REACH Award Program (Rewarding Educational Achievement and Cultivating Hope) offers annual monetary incentives of up to $100 to recognize academic excellence and perfect attendance for youth in grades K-12. To qualify, students must be residents of an Opportunity Home housing program. Awards are based on the final report card from the most recent school year.

  • Students must be enrolled in grades K-12.
  • Student must have earned one of the following final grades: A, B, or all A/Bs.
  • Perfect attendance eligibility is based on the final report card attendance record.
Application Guidelines
  • Submit only the final report card (progress reports will not be accepted).
  • Scan or save the final report card as a PDF and attach it to the application.
  • The final report card must be fully legible and complete.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Payment Method
  • Eligible students will receive further instructions to set up the payment process.
  • Awards are paid directly to the student via direct deposit or paper check. 
  • If opting for direct deposit, parents must open a checking or savings account in the student’s name.

ConnectHomeSA

Complete a two week, in-person training or 14 at home, self-paced computer training courses and earn a free digital device through ConnectHomeSA. The training is open to all residents participating in Opportunity Home programs.

Discounted Internet Service

More than a dozen internet service providers have agreed to continue offering discounted internet plans to low-income households through the end of 2024, as the federal program subsidizing the discounts comes to an end.

The Affordable Connectivity Program has ended and will no longer be available to families who qualify; however, you can still purchase discounted internet service from providers, such as: AT&T, Spectrum, Verizon and others.
