Opportunity Home Resident Selected as NAHRO “What Home Means to Me” Poster Contest Winner

Taraji Uribe, a 13-year-old resident participating in Opportunity Home San Antonio’s Housing Choice Voucher program, has been named one of 12 national winners of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials’ (NAHRO) “What Home Means to Me” Poster Contest.

Representing NAHRO’s Southwest Region, Uribe earned top honors for her original artwork depicting a wooden home resting on sturdy pillars labeled guidance, love, support and nurturing — symbols of the values that give her home its foundation.

“Home for me is filled with guidance, support, love and nurturing by my family,” Uribe shared in her accompanying essay. “It is a shelter of comfort and freedom where I can be myself and feel the safest.”

As part of the national recognition, Uribe will receive a $100 gift card and have her artwork featured in NAHRO’s “What Home Means to Me” 2026 calendar, alongside winning entries from youth across the country.

“Taraji’s creativity captures the heart of what we strive for every day — helping families build a place where care, support and opportunity take root,” said Susan Ramos-Sossaman, director of Community Development Initiatives at Opportunity Home. “Her artwork is an inspiring reflection of how home becomes the foundation where confidence and possibilities begin to grow.”

Now in its 17th year, NAHRO’s annual poster contest invites children and teens living in affordable housing or community development programs to illustrate what “home” means to them. The initiative encourages youth expression while highlighting the importance of safe, stable housing in shaping healthy, supportive lives.

Pre-orders are currently being accepted for NAHRO’s “What Home Means to Me” 2026 calendar at nahro.org/membership/what-home-means-to-me/. Order fulfillment will begin in November 2025.
