Changing the Way Seniors Age

Since 2004, Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) has been working with AARP to change how older adults age.

The organization, which started in New York City and has since expanded across the United States, including Texas, helps seniors explore their imaginations and capabilities through comprehensive technology programs and courses.

In 2023, Opportunity Home partnered with OATS to give Public Housing residents from Elderly and Disabled-specific communities access to the power of technology. Through the Chrome Essential course, residents have transformed from beginner computer users to expert navigators. The course is held at one Opportunity Home Elderly and Disabled property once a month, providing participants easy and convenient access to engaging learning opportunities.

In the course of five weeks, participants learn the basics of using a Chromebook, how to connect to the internet and set up a Gmail account, and password best practices. To maximize their learning and enjoyment of technology, OATS tailors the courses to each participant’s skill levels and provides technology tools such as Braille keypads and computer mice to help them navigate the course comfortably.

Upon completion of the course, residents receive a free Chromebook to continue mastering their skills, stay connected with loved ones and participate in telehealth appointments.

“We don’t teach technology just for the sake of residents learning it, or just for them to sign in to the internet,” said Emily Flores, OATS from AARP program lead. “It’s helping connect them to their loved ones through social media, scheduling medical appointments and checking test results, and participating in online exercises classes.””

As the world has evolved digitally, with the ability to connect, shop and apply for supportive assistance online, Flores emphasized the importance of empowering residents to utilize technology as they see fit.

“We let our students choose the best way they want to learn technology,” she said. “We give them the power to learn and use it on their own terms.”
